As caretakers for our dogs, it is our responsibility to protect them and keep them safe. One of the biggest dangers is traveling in the car. Every year, thousands of dogs are needlessly injured, killed or lost in motor vehicle accidents. The key is to use proper car safety restraints. So why take that chance? I could never live with myself if something happened to my dog which could have prevented. So, it is vital to take precautions to keep our precious fur babies safe.
Some of the available car safety restraints for dogs are:
The Console Car Booster: This is great for the smaller dogs (up to approx. 25 lbs) because it allows them to sit up higher. The Console Car Booster is secured with the seatbelt and has tethers that attach to your dog's harness.
The Dog Carriers: Not all dog carriers are equipped to function as a car safety seat. However, there are many of them out there that do. It will be secured with the seatbelt allowing your dog a confined space. Therefore, it prevents your dog from being thrown about the car or lost in the event of car accident.
Crates: These can be good for people that have SUV's and are able to secure them in the rear of the vehicle. Most big dogs can fit in a crate.
Harnesses: There are certain dog harnesses on the market that are designed to secure to the seatbelt. These are great for the larger dogs.
Although the image of the Console Car Booster Seat depicts it being secured in the front seat; I recommend never allowing your dog in the front seat. If the airbag deploys, it could crush them.
We should never take a chance with our precious cargo. Please make every effort to keep your dog safe. So don't forget, Car Safety for Dogs is a MUST!
